Symposium program

The aim of the Symposium is to discuss whether tea extracts as potential to be used as a future drug.  Selected speakers will discuss the various targets of tea as a drug, including cancer, mitochondria, metabolic syndrome, anti-photo-ageing,  or anti-angiogenesis.

 

 

Since EGCG or green tea extracts can be administrated orally, which provides advantages for clinical trials, efficacy of green tea on chemoprevention and chemotherapy has been widely investigated. Results from some of epidemiological and clinical studies have suggested that green tea consumption produced promising effects against development of some types of cancers without major toxicological side effects. However, data obtained from chemotherapeutic application of green tea extracts as treatment of established solid tumors are not impressive. A discussion will be offered on possible interpretations about the various outcomes of clinical studies using tea products, including the trial sizes, cancer types, tea types, genetic backgrounds, diets, and environmental factors.

Finally, the following hypothesis will be proposed: “Tea polyphenols could be used as a future drug for chemoprevention and chemosensitization/ radiosensitization, but not for chemotherapy”, with the aim to stimulate discussions, debates, and further investigations.

 

Pr Saverio Bettuzzi – Department of Experimentale Medecine, Parma, Italy

Dr Bettuzzi’s talk will bring the audience the most up to date information and the rationale that will very likely soon lead to the development of natural herbal extracts as novel FDA-approved drugs to be prescribed to patients by medical doctors.

 

Dr Matthias Laschke – Institute for Clinical and Experimental Surgery, Homburg, Germany

Dr Laschke will discuss how EGCG might be a promising therapeutic agent in the treatment of endometriosis preventing the establishment of new endometriotic lesions.

 

Pr Murat Turkoglu – Faculty of Pharmacy, Istanbul, Turkey

 

Dr Michael Boschmann – Experimental and Clinical Research Center, Berlin, Germany

 

 

Pr Marvin Edeas – President of International Society of Antioxidant in Nutrition

Dr Marvin Edeas will talk about how we can target the mitochondria withvarious antioxidants, particularly green tea.
